Vanaf begin dit jaar support Shoot Me Film Festival de lokale bioscoop Hamzaah Cinema in Gambia, Afrika.

Anywhere Cinema: Hamzaah Cinema
Hamzaah is een mythisch figuur uit de Koran, maar ook de naam van de jonge zoon van Abdul, de eigenaar van Hamzaah Cinema. Met de opbrengsten van een winkeltje en de kleine bioscoop kunnen zij zichzelf onderhouden. Het doel van Abdul is om boer te worden, en met dit project probeert hij geld te sparen om zijn eigen boerderij te beginnen.


Tijdens de opening waren er zo’n twintig mensen uit de buurt aanwezig. De programmering bestond uit twee films;
“Kunta Kinte”, een film die zich afpeelt in de tijd van slavernij. Het verhaal vertelt over Kunta Kinte, een slaaf  uit Gambia.

State of Mic
Hamzaah cinema is een samenwerking tussen State of Mic en het Shoot Me Film Festival. Het State of Mic-project is een internationaal uitwisselingsproject op het gebied van muziek, video en nieuwe media. Door het bouwen van een culturele brug tussen jongeren uit Nederland en Gambia, wordt het mogelijk om hen via hun eigen passies - zoals muziek - met elkaar in contact te brengen. Zo krijgen deze jongeren een kijkje in het dagelijkse leven, het land en de cultuur van de ander. Het biedt hun nieuwe perspectieven, zowel op een werelds als op een individueel niveau.

Momenteel wordt er gewerkt aan een documentaire en een serie die een kijk geven op het leven van jonge Gambianen. Een belangrijke vraag staat centraal: wie is er rijk in een wereld zonder grenzen? Het verhaal draait om een groep Gambiaanse jongeren met een droom. In de documentaire komen we erachter of de droom standhoudt tegen het harde, arme leven met de vele verleidingen. Kiezen de jongeren voor het creëren van nieuwe wegen, of worden ze door de omstandigheden teruggeworpen?


Anywhere Cinema
Een van de langere termijn doelstellingen van het Shoot Me Film Festival is om haar programma ook op minder welgestelde plekken in de wereld te vertonen. De positieve en constructieve kwaliteiten van het medium kunnen ingezet worden voor het tonen van actualiteiten, het toelichten van geschiedenis of om gewoon een leuke filmvoorstelling neer te zetten.

Anywhere Cinema: Shoot Me goes Africa

Starting this year, Shoot Me Film Festival is supporting its first local cinema in Gambia, Africa: Hamzaah Cinema.

Hamzaah Cinema
In addition to Hamzaah being a mythical figure from the Koran, Hamzaah is also the name of a small boy, the son of Abdul, the owner of Hamzaah cinema. Through a little shop and their small cinema, they are able to support themselves. The primary goal of Abdul is to become a farmer, and through this project he tries to raise finances for setting up his own farm.

Around twenty people from the neighborhood attended the official opening of the cinema. Two films were shown:

“Kunta Kinte”, set during the era of slavery, which tells the story of Kunta Kinte, a slave from Gambia.

State of Mic
Hamzaah Cinema is a collaboration between State of Mic and the Shoot Me Film Festival. The State of Mic project is an international exchange project that focuses on the exchange of music, video and new media. By building and supporting a cultural bridge between youngsters from The Netherlands and Gambia, they are brought into contact with each other through a medium they feel comfortable with: their artistic passion. The project offers them an impression of each other’s lives, a glimpse of another country and another culture, which facilitates introspection and provides a new perspective on themselves, and the world in general.

Currently, a documentary and a television series are in production, which give an impression of the life of young Gambians. The material addresses an important question: what is wealth in a world without boundaries? It tells the story of a group of young Gambians who have a dream. In the documentary we find out whether their dreams can become a reality in their harsh and poor environment, a place with many temptations. Will they set out in new directions? Will they be able to overcome their challenging circumstances?

Anywhere Cinema
One of the long term goals of the Shoot Me Film Festival is to bring film, with all its potential positive and constructive qualities, to the less fortunate areas of the world. Activities can range from showing current affairs, teaching history, or simply to organize an entertaining movie night. Hamzaah Cinema is the official first step of this project.
